Are CGMs reimbursed by the NHIF?
Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Systems have been reimbursed by the NHIF in Bulgaria since late 2021. As of February 1st 2023, the NHIF has announced the latest list of approved CGM sensors. It includes a total of 10 models for continuous glucose monitoring. Find below the list of approved CGMs in Bulgaria.

Medtrum TouchCare A7+ (NHIF code WF116) measures the glucose level every 2 minutes and is now calibration free. Medtrum A7+ sensor measures blood sugar 24/7 for a period of up to 14 days. Sensor insertion is quick and easy. The system supports remote monitoring, as well as cloud space for data storage for up to 2 years. Read more.

Requirements for Reimbursement
6 of the criteria are required (criteria 1, 2, 3, 7 and 8 are mandatory)
- Type 1 Diabetes: At least 6 months
- Insulin injections: At least 4 injections per day OR Insulin Pump Treatment
- Common and unpredictable Hypoglycemias (Hypos)
- Poor glycemic control: HbA1c above 8%
- Age: Under 18 years
- Pregnancy or planned pregnancy (excludes 1.)
- Good communication with healthcare team; Absence of frequent hospitalizations due to decompensated diabetes mellitus
- Expired reimbursement of test-strips
